LNitB- Ep 08 -The Beautiful City Alliance w/ Devon Ostrom
So As I begin the process of reinvigorating this blog, I’m reaching down into some older stuff. Not even that old, but also not exactly current right now. Myself and others from the LNitB Collective met up with Devon a few months ago to film this little piece. The beautiful city alliance is a pretty amazing initiative. Epic, really.
“In 2007, Executive Committee directed staff to report on a billboard tax to raise revenue to enhance funding for arts and culture / enforcement. This city building idea was then singled out in multiple staff reports as achieving a broad spectrum of public support and as the most popular in the Revenue Tools Consultations. Funding art was also used as the key reason for implementing the tax in all official documents, city press releases and consultant’s reports. On Nov. 4th 2009, the billboard tax to fund art and enforcement was unanimously passed by PGM Committee with all further amendments to occur at Council.”
See, it says 2007, but Devon et al have been working on this thing for 6 or 7 years. Like I said, epic. David and Goliath styles.

Paper Pushing
A (sort of) new project by the always amazing and super talented Jason Peter King, the wunderkind behind Paper Pusher Print Works and a bunch of other things you love.
From their website:
“A Micro Exhibit is like any other exhibition of art, albeit a little less static by venue, a little less formal in its invitations, no hours, no address, no sitter, a little more public, a little tiny sort of nomadic, no excuses, exhibit made of prints the size of business cards. Glued, taped, slipped, placed, pushed, stuck into unassuming venues, these exhibits are hosted in public washrooms, restaurants, the subway, bookstores, people’s bedrooms, schools… and more.
The life span of these exhibits varies enormously. Without volunteering their space, the host may take the work into their permanent collection, or have it disposed of rather shortly. Someone might pocket it, or gift it onto someone else. Whenever you see a Micro Exhibit you know that it was mounted recently, and maybe just for you. The pleasure of physically coinciding with one of these active exhibitions is like being chosen by the Print Fairies for an extra special art show.”
Jp asked me to submit a small mini series of digital collages I had been working on. He included them in the first wave of Paper Pushers Micro Exhibitions. See below.

Flight Patterns by Aaron Koblin
“Narrative made sense for cultures based on tradition and a small amount of information circulating in a culture – it was a way to make sense of this information and to tie it together (for instance, Greek mythology). Database can be thought of as a new cultural form in a society where a subject deals with huge amounts of information, which constantly keep changing, said Lev Manovich whom Aaron quoted to further ask the audience:
If the database is the new narrative, then what is the role of visualization? ” – WMMNA
